Calendar celebrates Australian art, Australian skies
Australian skies are an inspiration for many Australian artists, and the 2009 Australian Weather Calendar celebrates striking achievements in photography and painting.
Calendar sales began on Wednesday 5 November 2008 and ended Christmas Eve. However this year mail-order sales have been extended for three weeks, from Monday 5 January 2009 to Friday 23 January, while stocks last. The calendar can again be purchased online.
The weather calendar has been produced each year since 1985 by the Bureau of Meteorology and the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society as a not-for-profit publication. About 10,000 complimentary calendars are each year sent to volunteer and cooperative weather observers, heads of emergency services, Australian Missions overseas, and other national meteorological services around the world.

The weather calendar is a full-colour, large format (A2), spiral-bound wall calendar. Each calendar month features:
- Main photograph: A large picture featuring clouds, thunderstorms, lightning, rainbows, tornadoes or other events with a meteorological theme.
- Climate statistics: A table of average weather conditions for that month for 12 Australian cities and towns. The table includes elements such as average minimum and maximum temperatures, average rainfall and average wind speed. - Calendar: Each calendar month has large squares for each day and lists public holidays, daylight savings, moon phases, solstices and equinoxes. Each week starts on a Monday, placing Saturday and Sunday side-by-side to the right of the calendar, allowing weekend activities to be more easily recorded. The bureau is mindful that for many people the calendar is used to record many household and school activities and is valued for its utility.
- Theme: The calendar contains information on Australian artwork inspired by Australian skies, some meteorological information about the weather events in the 12 main photographs, plus background information about the photographer.
MAIL-ORDER SALES
Mail-order sales are conducted by Publicis Loyalty Pty Ltd, on behalf of the Bureau of Meteorology. Official sales began on Wednesday 5 November (registered customers can buy a little earlier) and ended at noon, Wednesday 24 December. Mail-order sales will re-open for a limited time, from Monday 5 January to Friday 23 January, while stock last. The calendar is dispatched in 60mm postal tubes from Melbourne, Australia.

DELIVERY
- In Australia: Calendars are sent via Australia Post's standard domestic parcel post service. Australia Post advises that parcels are generally delivered between 8am and 5pm. If the calendar will not fit into a letterbox and no one is home, the delivery driver will usually return the parcel to the local Australia Post outlet and a card will be left in the letterbox notifying the location of the outlet.
Australia Post also now has a policy of safe drop parcel delivery. This means that if the calendar will not fit into a letterbox and no one is home, the delivery driver can leave it in a safe location around the home, such as under a carport, veranda or porch, behind a plant pot, or behind a flyscreen door. The parcel must not be visible from the street or susceptible to damage from rain, for instance. A safe drop notification card will be left in the letterbox indicating where the calendar has been dropped. For more information contact Australia Post.
- Overseas: Calendars are sent via Spring Global Mail, with delivery times to New Zealand of about six to eight days; to Asia seven to 10 days; and to the Rest of the World seven to 17 days. These delivery times are indicative only and are based on average transit times in working days, excluding the day of collection.

All counter sales will be conducted at selected Bureau of Meteorology offices. Sales begin on Wednesday 5 November until sold out.
